""Steadfast""
By: P. Brian Machanic (South Burlington, VT)
This female woodcock (a.k.a. "timberdoodle") was found incubating her clutch of eggs on the edge of a seasonal wetland. These small gamebirds will hold tight on their nests until intrusion is very close, with their unique feather patterns providing an element of camoflage. This photo was taken at 20 yds with a 600 mm Nikkor lens - then I backed away.
