""Courtship Ritual""
By: P. Brian Machanic (South Burlington, VT)
American Goldeneye drakes feature this display in their courtship ritual: head and neck thrown backward such that the head rests on the bird's back; bird's bill is left open. Meanwhile, the drake paddles vigorously. in order that the hen Goldeneye can easily see the display. Sounds weird, but it apparently works !
