"Moonlit Sentinel"
By: Micheal Lee (Janesville, CA)
I captured this image in the “wee hours” of the “morning” under a full moon near Long Lake in Lassen County California. It was technically a week or so into spring but, at nearly 6000 feet above sea level, this area can often have snow on the ground for quite some time after the first day of spring. The bright moon reflecting sunlight back to Earth then further reflecting it off the white snow combined with the camera’s ability to gather light over time (in this case 10 seconds) gives an image in these conditions almost a daylight appearance until you look at the sky and see the stars that are bright enough to overcome that moonlight. I felt this weathered old snag sort of looked as if it was standing guard there in the night and I’ve always enjoyed the texture of old weathered wood.
