"Wood Duck Drake on the Sacramento River"

By: Micheal Lee (Janesville, CA)

I’ve long struggled to get a good photo of a wood duck drake. They are incredibly beautiful, but everywhere I usually see one, they are incredibly skittish too and get away before I can get a camera pointed at them. This one I saw on a Sacramento River float with my son was clearly a bit more used to people than the ones I encounter up here in my neighborhood. This area is basically in the middle of Redding, California, near the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, and sees a great deal of drift boat traffic as the local fly fishermen and guides launch their drift boats very near this spot. It was quite nice of the beautiful water bird to continue its casual swim as we floated by.
