"Baum Lake Rainbow Trout"
By: Micheal Lee (Janesville, CA)
This is one of several nice rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) my son caught on a memorable father-son camping and fishing trip to the McArthur-Burney Falls area of Shasta County, California. This fish took a gold spinner in Baum Lake, a popular little reservoir managed by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Baum Lake is one of Northern California’s most dependable trout fisheries. Fed by cold spring water and connected to the Hat Creek system, the lake stays productive year-round with a mix of stocked rainbows, browns, and the occasional hefty brood fish. Its spring creek-like character and steady hatches make it especially popular with fly anglers, though spin fishermen also find success from the banks or small boats. Gas motors aren’t allowed, keeping the atmosphere quiet and wildlife-rich—bald eagles, osprey, herons, and otters are regular sights. Fall and winter offer some of the best fishing, with clearer water and fewer crowds, but Baum Lake provides consistent action and natural beauty in every season and has provided me with many great memories, a few of which I’ve been lucky enough to photograph.
