"Stay Hydrated"

By: Micheal Lee (Janesville, CA)

I spotted this gray squirrel getting a drink while riding around a family ranch. This property in Shasta County California is absolutely gorgeous in the springtime when it’s very green and several little seasonal creeks like this one are flowing. I thought this whole scene just said “spring beauty!” Gray squirrels are highly adaptable creatures known for their intelligence and agility. They can leap up to 10 feet and are skilled at navigating treetops with ease. Their diet mainly consists of nuts, seeds, and berries, but they are opportunistic feeders and sometimes eat fungi or bird eggs. These squirrels play a vital ecological role by unintentionally planting trees, as they often forget where they bury their food caches.
