"Smoke Creek Jenny and Foal"

By: Mike Lee (Janesville, CA)

I took a little December drive through the Smoke Creek Desert in northern California and Nevada. As I neared the Nevada state line, I came across a small herd of burros which included this foal and jenny. The foal nursed for a time (image available elsewhere in my gallery) before the two of them struck a little pose for me. The little ones are absolutely precious to me in their fluffy, almost wool-like, winter coats. The Smoke Creek Desert is managed by The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and hosts a healthy population of wild horses and burros as well as pronghorn, mule deer and other assorted wildlife. Being a fairly short drove from my “home base” it is one of my favorite places to get away for a bit. It is also fairly remote country much of which is only accessible on foot or horseback or a VERY rugged and reliable vehicle (and take LOTS of water).
