"High Desert Lunch Time"

By: Mike Lee (Janesville, CA)

I took a little December drive through the Smoke Creek Desert in northern California and Nevada. It was apparently lunch time as I approached the Nevada state line. The Smoke Creek Desert is managed by The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and hosts a healthy population of wild horses and burros as well as pronghorn, mule deer and other assorted wildlife. Being a fairly short drove from my “home base” it is one of my favorite places to get away for a bit. It is also fairly remote country much of which is only accessible on foot or horseback or a VERY rugged and reliable vehicle (and take LOTS of water).
