"Ritual on the Prairie Stage"

By: David Sorensen (Duluth, MN)

Two sharp-tailed grouse meet in a quiet arena of tawny grass, locked in the ancient choreography of the lek. Wings fan low like curtained capes, tails rise like exclamation marks, and flashes of saffron eye-combs and violet air sacs punctuate the muted earth tones. The soft, unfussed background turns the prairie into a theater—where tension, elegance, and instinct play out in a single, suspended moment.
