Last winter, I went dog sledding with 14-year-old Piper Ashley and her Alaskan huskies. We raced across the snowy fields in near silence except for Piper’s commands, “Gee!” and “Haw!” The dogs enthusiastically obeyed, elated to do what they were literally born to do, what centuries of breeding had instilled in them.
